This castle is locate at the flat area of central Kyoto.
Central building of the castle (本丸・honmaru)is the old Katsuranomiya Palace(桂宮御殿) and relocated in around 1894.
There are more than three thousand wall paintings in the castle and one third of them were designated as Important Cultural Properties.
Building area : 3,300 square meters, six buildings, thirty-three rooms.
These six buildings stand like flying geese pattern from the southeast to the northwest and adjacent buildings are connected by a corridor.
The garden (二の丸庭園・Ninomaru-teien) was designated as Special Place of Scenic Beauty.
Important Cultural Property Ogawa-ke-Jutaku Residence(小川家住宅)
This was the residence of wealthy merchant Ogawa family in Edo Period, from the 17 century to the latter half of the 19 century.
This house is famous for its structure of construction like Ninja yashiki (屋敷・house).
Ninja (忍者) means secret agent of various kind of talent and succeeded mainly from the 16 century to the 19 century in Japan.
Against attack, their houses are provided with many trick furniture like a concealed staircase, a room for hiding and so on.
