Head Temple of Shingon sect Daigo school Buddhist
Founded in 874 by Rigen daishi Shobo(理源大師聖宝)
Priest Shobo built a hermitage for two Avalokitesvara (観音・Kan’non ) statues on the top of Mt.Daigo. This is said to be the beginning of Daigo-ji Temple(official name: Kami-daigo-ji・上醍醐寺・Upper Daigo-ji Temple).
After that, this temple developed and constructed a large temple complex.
However, most of the original buildings were destroyed by the repeated fires such as the ravages of war. And the precincts was reconstructed in the late 16th century with the contribution of Toyotomi Hideyoshi(豊臣秀吉1537-1598).
